Kyiv Ethno Trio
About:
Kyiv Ethno Trio is a Ukrainian art and world music initiative composed of three multi-instrumentalists: Maksym Berezhniuk on ethnic wind instruments, percussion and vocals; Orest Krysa on guitar and percussion and vocals; and Volodymyr Ponomarev on violin and percussion and vocals. Kyiv Ethno Trio’s work features unique ancient melodies and songs that they found and recorded in folklore expeditions in the villages of Ukraine. Their music is not an ethnographic collection, but is fused with modern music from a globalised world, meaning these ancient Ukrainian songs take on new forms.
Their music features Ukrainian traditional wind instruments from frontman Berezhniuk’s own collection, such as the sopilka (Ukrainian whistles), the ocarina, the overtone flute, jaw harps, the duduk (traditional Armenian woodwind instrument), horns, and koza (Ukrainian bagpipes). The band’s compositions are supposed to be bright and sonorous in order to immerse the listener in the atmosphere of ancient and contemporary Ukrainian music.
KET released their first LP in 2018. The artists perform in Kyiv and other cities of Ukraine. Each of the band’s members is a well-known musician in Ukraine with outstanding professional achievements and is a participant in many creative collectives and bands.
